Busy at the bar as always. I sat up the top and listened to the eclectic music and wondered at all the regimental cap-badges.
| Triple fff - Alton's Pride | 3.80 | | Had to have this seeing as how it's a previous Champion Beer of Britain. Couldn't quite see why it was a previous Champion Beer of Britain. Nice, dry, clean nutty bitter but nought special |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - No. 5 | 4.40 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Tring - Jack O Legs | 4.20 | Not Tried | |

19 Jul 2010 (Whinger)
Just like this pub always is, plenty of people enjoying good beer in a convivial atmosphere.
| Thornbridge Hall - Kipling | 5.20 | | I rarely mark any beer as exceptional, but this was as good as it gets. |
| Crouch Vale - Golden Duck | 3.80 | | A good session golden ale. |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Faversham Creek | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Wold Top - Golden Summer | 4.40 | Not Tried | |
14 Mar 2010 (Blair)
Second stop on our Sunday tour of Ramsgate. Fairly quiet and relaxed with a few of the usual characters in. Haven't seen Alistair in a long while which seems a bit odd. This is the real Thanet pub of the year 2010 regardless of what Thanet Camra say.
| Rudgate - Ruby Mild | 4.40 | | Rich, malty mild with lots of strong dark fruit going on. |
| Hopdaemon - Skrimshander | 4.10 | | Yup, great as ever. |
| Acorn - Motueka IPA | 5.00 | | Floral and grassy aroma with a sweet malty flavour and a hefty dose of hops. Good, but the not the best of Acorn's single hop varieties. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Kentish Reserve | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Triple fff - Alton's Pride | 3.80 | Not Tried | |

07 Mar 2010 (Blair)
It's been a long time since I've done a Sunday session, silly as it's easily my favourite day to go for a drink. Sat back, chilled out and listened to some Fleetwood Mac, good times.
| Dark Star - Hophead | 3.80 | | |
| Brentwood - Lumberjack | 5.20 | | Darker than I remember. Sweet and malty with a hint of chocolate and berries. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Oyster Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Pearl of Kent | 4.50 | Not Tried | |

05 Mar 2010 (Blair)
I think we were all mildly disappointed with the range tonight, but that seems to be a common issue with Thanet pubs at the moment. Sat downstairs in the 'flight lounge', I still feel like a child when I'm down there.
| Hopdaemon - Skrimshander | 4.10 | | Still a reliable malty bitter. Classic beer. |
| West Berkshire - Full Circle | 4.50 | | Pleasant fruity and malty with subtle hoppiness. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Oyster Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
26 Feb 2010 (Blair)
Don't remember all that much to be honest, not even sure where I sat. Do vaguely remember rifling through the box of hats, inevitable when drunk in the Arty.
| West Berkshire - Good Old (or Ordinary) Boy | 4.00 | | Yeah a nice traditional bitter. Nothing fancy but does the job well. Malty with a fruity bready flavour, I liked it. |
| West Berkshire - Doctor Hexter's Healer | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
17 Feb 2010 (Blair)
Second stop on our brief walk through Ramsgate. Talked to the man now in charge of the cellar for a while, seems enthusiastic just hope he can keep it up.
| Dark Star - Six Hop Ale | 6.50 | | Intensely hoppy and fruity. Brilliant beer. |
28 Jan 2010 (Blair)
Practically empty in here tonight. Had a chat with Gray the Dray for a while then finished my pint and cycled home.
| Triple fff - Alton's Pride | 3.80 | | Sweet, fruity ale with a little caramel and malt. Pleasant. |
| Dark Star - Hophead Amarillo | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| RCH - Pitchfork | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
22 Jan 2010 (Blair)
I was off to Eindhoven in the early hours so had a few pints to help me get an early night. Got here at around 6 and it was already fairly busy.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - 80/- | 4.60 | | I'm a big fan of this beer. Sweet and malty with plenty of caramel. The beer version of a dessert almost, very good. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Dark Conspiracy | 4.90 | | I definitely preferred this beer last year, however, it is still top notch. Rich, dark and fruity. |
| Dark Star - Hophead Amarillo | 3.80 | | Unsurprisingly this was fairly similar to normal hophead. Light and hoppy although a slight chemical aftertaste let it down slightly for me. Still a good beer. |
| Acorn - Lubelski IPA | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
17 Jan 2010 (Blair)
Met my dad here for a quick afternoon pint. Pretty busy with a family friendly vibe to the place. I got some roast potatoes so I was happy.

| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
18 Dec 2009 (Blair)
A friend's birthday and he doesn't really like this pub so we slyly came here for a quick one first. Quite busy with everyone just starting to get into festive spirit.
| Elgood's - Snickalmas | 5.00 | | I really liked this, which I did not expect. Sweet and very fruity with rich dark malts. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Dark Star - Hophead | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Dark Star - Original | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
10 Dec 2009 (Blair)
Pretty quiet, maybe due to the rather uninspired line-up. Still, friendly woman behind the bar, she's fit in perfectly.
| Triple fff - Comfortably Numb | 5.00 | | I really liked this, very fruity with loads of toffee malt. A really tasty beer. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Dark Star - Hophead | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - No. 5 | 4.40 | Not Tried | |
04 Dec 2009 (Blair)
We were all a little tipsy when we got here, there was a big group of us so we occupied the flight seats downstairs. New barman, really friendly guy who randomly decided to play us some guitar.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Dark Conspiracy | 4.90 | | Thick dark and delicious. |
| Hidden - Pint | 3.80 | | Fairly hoppy and malty, pretty standard but enjoyable bitter. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
21 Nov 2009 (Blair)
I can't seem to get here anough lately, superb pub. The new lady behind the bar is doing a great job as well.
| Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | | Very hoppy light ale. Even a stubborn lager drinker said he'd drink this if it was a couple of degrees colder. Great beer. |
| Dark Star - Festival | 5.00 | | Rich almost treacly ale with loads of sugary fruit and toffee. |
| Wells & Young's - Young's Special | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Cockle Warmer | 4.70 | Not Tried | |
19 Nov 2009 (Blair)
Still the best pub in the area in my humble opinion. Handful of people in tonight, Alistair was behind the bar helping pull through a beer. Chatted to him about his railway adventure to 'Brizzle' this coming weekend. Sat in the flight deck and sank a couple.
| White Dog - Boot Hill | 5.80 | | Aggressively hoppy, sweet and a little fruity. Reminded me a little of dark Star's Six Hop. Very, very good. |
| Mauldons - Suffolk Pride (aka Suffolk Punch) | 4.80 | | Not that impressed with this, fruity with a little malt. But a strange flavour that I found off-putting. |
| Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Nethergate - Old Growler | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
13 Nov 2009 (Blair)
I actually only have a vague recollection of being here, but I have been assured that we were here for at least a couple of pints. I remember being disappointed that they've got rid of their bin full of hats!
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Dark Conspiracy | 4.90 | | Rich and complex porter. Really is delicious. |
31 Oct 2009 (Blair)
Got here at around half 10 after going to a family do in Minster. Packed house tonight with a loud, hectic atmosphere. Still nice to see this place thriving, but the line-up was a little weak so left after the one.
| Loddon - Ferryman's Gold | 4.40 | | Golden ale with loads of fruit and toffee with a hint of malt. A little sweet for me today, but there's no denying it's a good beer. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Kentish Reserve | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - No. 7 | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
24 Oct 2009 (Blair)
I really fancied a drink and it had been a little while so decided to drop in for a couple. The usual suspects in tonight, plus many new faces. Good friendly atmosphere.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Oatmeal Stout | 4.60 | | Superb, rich, smooth and oaty stout. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Dogbolter Winter Porter | 5.60 | | My first pint of dog in motnhs, it's been far too long. Lovely rich porter, lots of roasted malt and dark fruit with a lovely tartness. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Winkle Picker | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
09 Oct 2009 (Blair)
Got here at around 11 after getting back from The Butchers. Relieved to find it still open and very busy. This pub is doing really well at the moment, seems to be busy all the time which is really good to see. Had a long chat with Steve from Gadds' brewery about beer related things.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Oatmeal Stout | 4.60 | | A delicious and moreish stout, rich and creamy with a really satisfying flavour. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Strange Fish | 5.20 | | An english strong ale made with a bavarian yeast apparently. Makes for a strange combination of an english ale mixed with a wheat beer. I kept switching between really liking it and then just finding it really weird. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - No. 7 | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Kentish Reserve | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Triple fff - Stairway To Heaven | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
25 Sep 2009 (Blair)
Arrived at about 9 and it was heaving. Seems to be changing it's image slightly at the moment, rediscovering it's identity. The music has been turned up, and classic tunes from the likes of Led Zep and The Stones were blaring out. Had people dancing downstairs, great atmosphere.
| Dark Star - American Pale Ale | 4.70 | | Deliciously light and hoppy ale, with a lovely grapefruit finish. |
| Crouch Vale - Hurricane | 4.20 | | Sweet bitter with a toffee apple like flavour to it. Another good beer from Crouch Vale. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - East India Pale Ale | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
06 Sep 2009 (Blair)
Once again it's been a while so I dragged myself out of the house and down my favourite pub. Surprised to find out Ross is no longer working here, he'll surely be missed. Quite busy with a large group of chaps having an excited chat about trains, each to their own I suppose.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - No. 3 | 5.00 | | Not at it's best but still an enjoyable pint. Sweet with lots of caramel and malt. |
| Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Young's Special | 4.50 | Not Tried | |

29 Aug 2009 (Ian)
Really a very good pub indeed. Good range of clientele, good banter and a very good beer range.
| Oakham - Bishops Farewell | 4.60 | | Just a tad soapy on the hops, but so drinkable it is untrue. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - She Sells Sea Shells | 4.70 | | Just about my favourite Ramsgate beer now. Very good hops on this. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Downton - New Forest Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Dark Star - Sunburst | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
09 Aug 2009 (Blair)
Packed out tonight, great to see. Sat downstairs in the new flight lounge. A pleasure as always.
| Kelham Island - Pale Rider | 5.20 | | Great beer. Lemony and fruity, easy to drink. |
| Milk Street - The Usual | 4.10 | | Malty best bitter with a pleasant orange flavour to it. |
| Wells & Young's - Young's Special | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
25 Jun 2009 (Blair)
It's been a while but home at last. The usual characters. Sat up top, chatted to Ali for a while and got a bit tipsy, good stuff.
| Bath - Barnstormer | 4.50 | | Apparently this is a premium bitter. Looks and tastes more like a porter to me. Either way I thought it was fantastic. Light with subtle flavours of coffee and chocolate. A very distinguished beer. |
| Kelham Island - Pale Rider | 5.20 | | Not as good as I've had it previously for whatever reason, still a very tasty strong pale ale though. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - No. 5 | 4.40 | | Malty and fruity, just a great bitter. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
23 May 2009 (Blair)
May have been a mistake to head here after already doing 2 beer festivals. Nevertheless I remember having a great time. Don't remember leaving so I hope I behaved myself...
| Beowulf - Dragonsmoke Stout | 4.70 | | I loved this. Wonderfully rich and smoky stout. I had a fair few of them which I don't normally do, so it must say something. |
| Dark Star - Original | 5.00 | | Dark and roasty. A great old ale. |
| Springhead - Roaring Meg | 5.50 | | Light and fruity with hops and honey in there. I liked it. |
10 May 2009 (Blair)
It was a gorgeous day so I had to come to the pub. Not overly busy but a steady stream of people came in and out. Good relaxing atmosphere.
| RCH - East Street Cream | 5.00 | | I love this beer. Malty and creamy, a pleasure to drink. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - No. 5 | 4.40 | | Good malty best bitter. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Oyster Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
09 May 2009 (Blair)
Great beer lineup tonight and a great atmosphere to boot. Had a good chat with Ross the barman and of course Alistair.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Thoroughly Modern Mild | 6.00 | | This was absolutely fantastic. A light amber colour but with the sort of chocolate malt flavour you'd associate with a dark mild. Really rich and incredibly interesting beer. |
| Teignworthy - Martha's Mild | 5.30 | | Dark and rich mild. Molasses, smoke and a bit of chocolate make up this beer. I really enjoyed it. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Dragon's Blood | 5.30 | Not Tried | |
| RCH - East Street Cream | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| RCH - Pitchfork | 4.30 | Not Tried | |

04 May 2009 (Blair)
Busier than Churchill's. Alistair was in. Sat up top, stuck on some Led Zep and had a couple of pints. Perfect.
| Dark Star - Original | 5.00 | | A fantastic beer. Thick, rich and satisfying. Chocolate and roasted malt dominate. |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Winkle Picker | 4.50 | | I've never been a fan of The Whitstable Brewery but I was impressed with this. Vibrant fruity bitter with a little malt. Really drinkable. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Young's Special | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
17 Apr 2009 (Blair)
Got here around midnight, I was expecting it to be closed but it was actually heaving. The complete opposite to Churchill's. Sat up top and soaked up the atmosphere.
| Oakleaf - I Can't Believe It's Not Bitter | 4.20 | | I actually really enjoyed this. Tasted more like a bitter than a lager but with a bit of a lager hint. Light zingy and refreshing. |
| Dark Star - American Pale Ale | 4.70 | | Pale, sweet and very hoppy. A really pleasant beer. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
05 Apr 2009 (Blair)
Really busy, which is great to see on a sunday evening. Ross behind the bar was telling me all the beers they've got lined up. I think this will be a good week to pay it a couple of vsits.
| Stonehenge - Old Smokey | 5.00 | | I haven't been that impressed with any of Stonehenges beers before so I wasn't expecting much of this. However, this beer is actually fantastic. Fruity with lots of roasted malt and obviously a little smokiness. |
| Hopdaemon - Skrimshander | 4.10 | | Sweet and hoppy with a nice toffee flavour. One of my original favourite ales. |
| Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
01 Apr 2009 (Blair)
Wandered here after a couple on Churchill's. It was really busy in tonight Alistair was here as well as Gray the Dray. The new landlord seems to have breathed new life into this pub.
| Freeminer - Slaughter Porter | 4.80 | | Very good stout, although it tasted very much of wholemeal bread which was strange at first. |
| Loddon - Ferryman's Gold | 4.40 | | I didn't expect much from this one for whatever reason but it was really good. Rich, fruity and very refreshing. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Dogbolter Winter Porter | 5.60 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Common Conspiracy | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
21 Mar 2009 (Andrew)
A handful of folk in but very friendly they were. We sat up top and wrote lists of favourite beers and pubs - as you do when you've had a few and don't care you've turned into a beer geek..
| Fyne - Vital Spark | 4.40 | | Fruity black beer with citrus hops |
| Country Life - Black Boar | 5.00 | | Black beer, longingly rich and roasted (according to my rather illegible notes) |
| Abbeydale - Absolution | 5.10 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
21 Mar 2009 (Ian)
Last pub on visit to Ramsgate and Andrew made us make lists of stuff. Nicer now the pub has been re-decorated a bit. Martin and myself then went to Waitrose and had a very funny moment with the woman behind the deli counter. Great beer choice in there as well
| Abbeydale - Absolution | 5.10 | | Brilliantly hoppy ESB, lovely and tasty |
| Fyne - Vital Spark | 4.40 | | Surprisinly hoppy for a dark beer |
| Country Life - Black Boar | 5.00 | | Very dark brown/black beer. Choccy flavours and even a bit sour |
11 Mar 2009 (Blair)
Only a few people in. Looks like the refurb is complete now. Alistair was telling us about Steampunks, makes sense if you know him.
| Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Smooth and malty. A very easy drinking bitter. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Brewsters - Rutterkin | 4.60 | Not Tried | |
| Hopdaemon - Skrimshander | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
07 Mar 2009 (Blair)
Once again very busy, a really good sign for this pub especially with Churchill's having a band on just round the corner. Saying that, a couple of people in here watned us that the band at churchill's were a bit rubbish.
| Dark Star - Espresso Stout | 4.20 | | This is just like getting a nice stout and doing a depth charge with espresso. Really odd but strangely satisfying. The coffee does get a little intense towards the end, I wouldn't want more than a pint. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
| Abbeydale - Absolution | 5.10 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Kentish Reserve | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
28 Feb 2009 (Blair)
Couldn't resist coming back after how good friday night was. Not as busy tonight but still a fair few people in. I don't remember leaving so it must have been a good night.
| Hopdaemon - Leviathan | 6.00 | | Actually tasted better than the night before. Rich and fruity with lots of chocolate. Beautiful beer. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - 80/- | 4.60 | | Equally good as before. |
| Hopdaemon - Skrimshander | 4.10 | | Best pint of this I've ever had, hands down. Smooth and very malty with a delicate hoppy flavour to it. Almsot 5/5. |
| Wolf - Granny Wouldn't Like It | 4.80 | | I was really impressed with this. A traditional bitter flavour, very well rounded. Quite malty and nutty with a bit of citrus and caramel. Yup, it's good. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
27 Feb 2009 (Blair)
I have never seen this place so busy, it was literally shoulder to shoulder. The new landlord Smudge had put on a big buffet downstairs as well. Great night with a fantastic beer lineup.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - 80/- | 4.60 | | Extremely malty as you'd expect froma scottish heavy, also very smooth. A pleasure to drink. |
| Hopdaemon - Leviathan | 6.00 | | Definately not a sgood as it was last year, a little thin in the motuh and not a sstrong flavoured. Still a great beer though. Very fruity with a lot of chocolate as well. |
| Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | | This beer is starting to grow on me, the sheer aggression of the hops takes me by surprise each time. |
| Nethergate - Old Growler | 5.00 | | Dark tasty beer with a lot of roasted malt and a little chocolate. There was something missing though and I couldn't figure out what it was. |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Pearl of Kent | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
25 Feb 2009 (Blair)
Reopened after a brief closure, now under new management. Alistair was visibly excited at the fact the Arty was back. A strong smell of paint but they've done the place up quite well.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - No. 5 | 4.40 | | This is growing on me as time goes by, I used to ignore this beer when I saw it but it's actually very good. Dark ruby coloured with a toffee apple flavour to it. |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Kentish Reserve | 5.00 | | Not a fan of the Whitstable brewery and this did nothing to change my opinion. Bland and uninspired. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - No. 3 | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
14 Feb 2009 (Blair)
Only two people in other than us, not good for 8pm on a friday night. We left after 1, the beer lineup wasn't good enough so we went straight back to churchill's.
| Teignworthy - Amy's Ale | 4.80 | | Dark amber coloured bitter. Fruity with caramel and diacetyl. Cloying and not easy to drink. Not impressed, should have had the 80/-. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - 80/- | 4.60 | Not Tried | Had a sip of my mates and it was fantastic. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
07 Feb 2009 (Blair)
Nipped in just before closing. Alistair was in so we had a good chat about yesterdays events at the beer festival.
| Crouch Vale - Anchor Street Porter | 4.90 | | Almost excellent if it wasn't so watery. Great tasting with nice malts and chocolate but yeah, too watery. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Young's Special | 4.50 | Not Tried | |

03 Feb 2009 (Blair)
Popped in for a quick one before going home. Fair few in, Alistair was here so briefly chatted about Dover beer festival. It's going to be a good one.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Dogbolter Winter Porter | 5.60 | | Very nearly 5 stars for this one. Rich, dark and chocolatey. Silky smooth with a nice underlying coffee/smoke taste to it. This is getting better and better, much like all of Eddie's beers. |
| Dark Star - Original | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
31 Jan 2009 (Blair)
Good to see this pub nice and busy. Although it pains me to say it, the beer quality has been slipping just lately. Still a great pub though, with a great bunch of regulars.
| Castle Rock - Elsie Mo | 4.70 | | My friends really liked this, but I found it a little dull. Maybe it would be better on a hot summers day, but it didn't do it for me tonight. |
| Northumberland - Crimson Pirate | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Triple fff - Stairway To Heaven | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
27 Nov 2008 (Blair)
Got a seat upstairs this time. Had the usual fun playing with the box of hats.
| Archers - Golden Bitter | 4.70 | | Sweet, fruity and hoppy with a little citrus to boot. Not great, but for an Archers beer this isn't bad. |
| Cottage - Great Western | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
| Wyre Piddle - Piddle in the Snow | 5.20 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried | |

26 Nov 2008 (Blair)
Came for a swift couple after going to the cinema. Pretty busy for a wednesday, busy enough to make us sit downstairs at least. Usual bunch including allistair were in.
| Purity - Pure UBU | 4.50 | | Fantastic pint. Smooth as velvet with plenty of malt and a little hop. Really good beer. |
| Cottage - Great Western | 4.80 | | It seems that Cotage have a tendency of making very average beers, this one is no exception. This one is a relatively dark one. Sweet with a little toffee, quite thin in the mouth. It was alright. |
| Wyre Piddle - Piddle in the Snow | 5.20 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Archers - Golden Bitter | 4.70 | Not Tried | |

Second pub on Ramsgate lunch time crawl. Half a dozen punters at the bar. The real fire at the rear was a real welcome on a bitterly cold day. The Thrillers were on the jukebox and then a weird 1930s/40s collection including Noel Coward's Mad Dog and Englishmen and then the Proclaimers.
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Kentish Reserve | 5.00 | | Copper. Very distinctive hop aroma. That's pretty good. Nice tangerine fruit, excellent earthy hops. I'm quite impressed. Very drinkable tangerine hoppy strong bitter. Good spice on finish. |
| Wells & Young's - Young's Winter Warmer | 5.00 | | Funny, I was looking at my entries for this beer only a couple of days ago. One of my favourite winter warmer beers, but this was more liquoricey than I remember. A steal at £2.50 a pint. Maybe its the first time they have brewed this at the new plant. |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
15 Nov 2008 (Blair)
Too busy upstairs so went down and played some pool. Had a good chat with the landlord about Dark Star and how utterly fantastic they are.
| Oakham - Bishops Farewell | 4.60 | | Top beer. Very hoppy and very refreshing. I love it. |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Bohemium Lager | 4.90 | | I wasn't overly impressed, not a fan of this brewery really. Citrussy and lagerlike, as you'd expect. Not my bag. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
13 Nov 2008 (Blair)
My brother decided to join us at the pub for the first time in around 18 months, so I had to bring him down the Arty. Busy, with the usual friendly faces around the bar.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Storm Warning | 5.00 | | Thick, rich and chocolatey. This is one of my favourite Gadds' beers. Helps cheer you up on a miserable winters day. |
| Brewsters Brewing Co - Stilton Porter | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
31 Oct 2008 (Blair)
Halloween fancy dress party. All the locals turned up in their costumes, made for a fun night. Plus they laid on a buffet.
| Oakham - Hawse Buckler | 5.60 | | Just as good as the other day, knocks you for six. |
| Moorhouses - Witch Hunt | 4.80 | | Good fruity ale, not as good as the other day though. Makes me wonder if I was just a little bit tipsy last time... |
| Crouch Vale - Eldorado | 4.40 | | Good hoppy ale, nice and sweet. |
30 Oct 2008 (Blair)
Busy with a great bustling atmosphere. Sat chatting to Alistair about the various pubs I've got to go visit.
| Oakham - Hawse Buckler | 5.60 | | There is no way I can give a beer this complex and interesting anything less than 5 stars. Very dark porter style beer. Very burned roast malt flavour with tons of hops, chocolate and coffee. Bit of fruit in there as well. Just an exceptional beer. |
| Moorhouses - Witch Hunt | 4.80 | | Two fantastic beers in one night. This almost deserved 5 in my books. Very fruity with a really interesting flavour that I just couldn't quite pin down. Top stuff. |
| Crouch Vale - Wild Hop | 4.10 | | This beer is all about the hops. Obviously very hoppy with a little sweet malt as well. Nice beer. |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
19 Oct 2008 (Blair)
They've got a pool table downstairs now. I would never have thought they could fit one down there!
| Kelham Island - Pale Rider | 5.20 | | Great, just as it was yesterday. |
| Crouch Vale - Eureka! | 4.60 | | Sweet, almost cloying but not quite. Nice enough, but probably the worst Crouch Vale beer I've had. |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | | I finally tried this, I'd never been excited about doing so. As i expected, it isn't a particularly interesting beer. Malty with a harsh finish. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Pearl of Kent | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Storm Warning | 5.00 | Not Tried | Went off when I ordered it. |

18 Oct 2008 (Blair)
Once again popped in for a quick nightcap. I night out in ramsgate doesn't seem complete without a trip to the artillery.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Storm Warning | 5.00 | | Just as tasty as it was on friday night. |
| Oakleaf - Hole Hearted | 4.70 | | This is one of the best beers around in my opinion. Fruity and hoppy with hints of citrus. Lovely. |
| Kelham Island - Pale Rider | 5.20 | | Sweet and very fruity. I was really impressed with this one. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
17 Oct 2008 (Blair)
Came for a quick pint before closing. I think I was a little tipsy by this point. I stuck some Led Zeppelin and Michael Jackson on the jukebox and was in my happy place.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Storm Warning | 5.00 | | This beer is stunning. Rich and viscous with loads of chocolate and roasted malt. One of my favourites. |
| Oakleaf - Hole Hearted | 4.70 | Not Tried | |

Got here at around 8 and it was pretty quiet, just a couple of locals at the bar. It did mean we got the comfy seats though.

| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |

Just a quick pint on our way through to broadstairs. Alistair was in so had a quick chat about last weeks events at the butchers.
| Dark Star - Porter (aka City) | 5.50 | | Dark brown not black as I'd expect. This is a lovely beer. Nice roasted malt and chocolate with a great mouthfeel. Top stuff. |
28 Sep 2008 (Blair)
Quiet, sat up top and sunk my pint. Was only in here a short while.
| Batemans - Combined Harvest | 4.70 | | Sweet, almost sickly. Lots of toffee with a bit of malt. Alrightish. |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
13 Sep 2008 (Blair)
Yup best pub visit of the night. Busy with a really friendly bunch of people.
| Dark Star - Original | 5.00 | | Great beer. Very dark with a malty chocolate flavour. Quite rich and satisfying. |
| Mayfields - Auntie Myrtles | 5.00 | | Malty, fruity strong bitter. Pretty good. |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
05 Sep 2008 (Blair)
I was in my old school uniform so that got a fair few strange comments. Turns out Alistair and me went to the same school, albeit 30 years apart.
| Brewsters - Rutterkin | 4.60 | | This was completely different to sunday night. I was looking forward to this, but it tasted like soap and detergent. Not sure what went wrong here. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Special | 5.20 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Oyster Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | |

31 Aug 2008 (Blair)
Pretty busy, had to sit downstairs. They've reorganised it a bit so there's more seating. I really love this pub.
| Brewsters - Rutterkin | 4.60 | | Lovely golden beer. Very fruity with a fair amount of malt. Very smooth and satisfying. Top notch. |
| Dark Star - Sunburst | 4.80 | | Very hoppy with lots of fruit and sweet malt. Not as good as the summer solstice but a great beer nonetheless. |
| Sharps - Special | 5.20 | | Creamy with a strong malty flavour, little bread and hops. Sharps really are distinctive. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | | Perfumey aroma. Very fruity with bags of malt. Reliable beer. |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Oyster Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
21 Aug 2008 (Andrew)
I walked in and immediately spotted Alistair at the bar chatting to the chap (Bas was his name) I’d seen drinking bottles in the Montefiore. I sat at the bar and chatted to them both about all manner of things from beer to Scottish Islands. I love pubs and I love sitting at bars chatting to people about pubs and beer whilst ploughing into a session. Top stuff.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | | If you can’t get a good pint of Gadd’s in Ramsgate where can you. This was a good pint. A light, amber, slightly drying, slightly rich best bitter. I had this twice. |
| Milk Street - The Usual | 4.10 | | I once had a fling with a girl from Frome so every time I see a Milkstreet beer I have to have it. It was a rich orange best bitter that tasted of orange peel. |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Teignworthy - Harvester | 5.50 | Not Tried | I had a taster of this. It was a rich golden beer that had far too much richness it in for me. Nothing wrong with it (it was in good condition) just not my kind of beer. |
| RCH - Steam Festival | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
17 Aug 2008 (Blair)
Fairly quiet with not much atmosphere, but then it was early afternoon on a sunday.

06 Aug 2008 (Blair)
Really busy, sat up top with Alistair where he was boasting about being to the Great British Beer Festival already. Only 2 days left for me...
| Sharps - Atlantic IPA | 4.60 | | Looks lovely, malty with plenty of hops. This was fantastic, could have drunk it all night. |
| Sharps - Doom Bar | 4.00 | | Great beer, malty, creamy and refreshing. A really reliable one. |
| White - White Gold | 4.90 | | After the two Sharps' this was pretty meh. Still nice but not all that exciting. Bit of hop, bit of malt. |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
31 Jul 2008 (Blair)
Needed a good pint after a night of bottled guinness. Unfortunately this wasn't the place for it tonight.

Empty as all the ale drinkers were rightfully drinking in Eddie's ale tent at the 'Powerboat' festival.
| Triple fff - Stairway To Heaven | 4.30 | | I was very drunk by this point. Can't say I remember all that much about this beer. I remember liking it though. |

27 Jun 2008 (Blair)
Good atmosphere tonight, the girls still aren't sure about it in here though. May be a little too 'blokish' for them.
| Dark Star - Sunburst | 4.80 | | Really nice, bursting with fruit and hops. Really good summer ale. |
| Cottage - Paws | 4.90 | | Quite dark, almost porter like. Lovely chocolate and fruit flavour. Good interesting beer. |
| Batemans - Summer Swallow | 3.90 | | Malty bitter. Good condition but pretty bland and certainly not exciting. |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
20 Jun 2008 (Blair)
Pretty quiet for a friday night. Few lecherous old men at the bar who took a shine to the girls I was with, they were just about harmless though.
| Oakham - Mompesson's Gold | 5.00 | | This was a stunning pint, hoppy with lovely sweet malt. Bags of flavour. If only all summer ales were this good. |
| Grainstore - Pride of Scotgate | 4.30 | | This wasn't great, quite fruity. Grew on me slightly but not particularly enjoyable. |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
16 Jun 2008 (Blair)
Only one other person in tonight, but the beer line-up was great so I'm not going to complain.
| White Horse - Black Horse Porter | 5.00 | | This porter is outstanding. Lots of chocolate with a slightly smoky background. This almost gets 5 stars. |
| Fyne - Highlander | 4.80 | | Pretty good ESB, lacks a little character but enjoyable nonetheless. |
| Acorn - Navigator | 4.80 | | Very well rounded strong bitter. |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Pearl of Kent | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
05 Jun 2008 (Blair)
Very busy so had to sit downstairs in the 'dungeon'. Managed to get two lager drinkers to try a gadds' beer and they liked it so that's my good deed for the day.
| Hepworth - Iron Horse | 4.80 | | Surprised me at first but it won me over. Really good strong bitter. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Gadd's Dr Sunshine's Special Friendly English Wheat Ale | 4.20 | | I've been looking forward to this. Really tasty, not my normal kind of beer. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
04 Jun 2008 (Blair)
Stop number 2. Pretty busy round the bar, managed to grab a seat up top. Great atmosphere as always.
| Archers - Strong Dark Mild | 5.00 | | I can't believe I'm giving an Archers' beer 5 stars but this one really was stunning. The aroma is fantastic with a little coffee then the taste is full of chocolate and coffee with a nice viscosity. Gorgeous stuff. |
| Matthew's - Tims Bier | 4.60 | | A little different but quite nice. Continental style ale, quite sweet and malty. |
| Loddon - Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
21 May 2008 (Blair)

| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
23 Apr 2008 (Blair)
Met some mates in here, love the bucket of strange hats. Good atmosphere if a little quiet considering it was St Georges Day.
| Potbelly - Beijing Black | 4.40 | | One of my favourites, always overjoyed when I see it. Black mild, with no hops apparently. Really good. |
| Wells & Young's - Young's Special | 4.50 | | Quite sweet and malty, little hoppiness. Pretty good bitter. |

19 Apr 2008 (Blair)
Really lively, friendly crowd. Good to see the landlord Dave back in here. Haven't seen him for about 6 months and the pub seemed to be slipping without him. A strange man kept trying to dance with me, it was a little off-putting.
| Daleside - Starbeck Stout | 4.20 | | Roasted malt with hints of chocolate and coffee. Good stout, although it could do with a little more body. |
| Hop Back - Summer Lightning | 5.00 | | Grassy, hoppy flavour with a slight alcohol finish. This is a good beer, but not sure it deserves all the hype it gets. |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Kentish Reserve | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Archers - Golden Bitter | 4.70 | Not Tried | |

Fairly quiet, I was a little on the tipsy side by this point so didn't notice much else.
| Ossett - Excelsior | 5.20 | | Gold with a thick white head. Sweet floral hop aroma, slightly soapy. Crisp grainy hop taste. Good bitter finish. |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Whitstable Brewing Company - Oyster Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | |

Busy with a mixture of young and old. The music was lively and loud and the atmosphere was good
| Swansea - Deep Slade Dark | 4.00 | | Black with a minimal head. Had a chalky sheen to the surface. Tasted powdery with a base-bitterness to it and a slight hint of blackcurrent. |

| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Archers - Special Bitter | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
08 Feb 2007 (Andrew)
What a great pub and this is the first time I've noticed they have a down-stairs. It was fairly busy around the bar so I sat up above it. Led Zep and Pink Floyd were playing on the juke box and the air was thick with smoke. Alaistair was at the bar rubbing in the fact that only he knew when Whitsunday was.
| Northumberland - Fog on the Tyne | 4.10 | | A golden beer with no head that smelt of wet hay. Tasted of wild strawberries with hints of kiwi and subtle mandarine. The finish was short lived and had a sweet mandarine bitterness to it. |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Dogbolter Winter Porter | 5.60 | | I had this for the first time really 5 days ago at the Dover Beer Festival and this just goes to show you can't define a pint of real ale by trying it once. This was a totally different pint. Imagine drinking alcoholic raisens with the sugar taken out, combined with burnt parsnip and with a rich dark dry sherry bitter finish. It was nothing like the Dover beer. I must have more before I make my mind up about it. |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Cottage - Between the posts | 4.60 | Not Tried | |
| Branscombe Vale - Anniversary Ale | 4.60 | Not Tried | |
20 Apr 2006 (Andrew)
Fairly busy and friendly. I came in carrying a plastic bag and one of the regulars thought I'd brought in a Chinese to share with him. Heard a great quote from a drunk bloke opposite: 'Fundamentally, it might or might not'.
| Itchen Valley - Easter Bunnies | 3.90 | | Smelt of sour malt (in a good way). Brown beer with a short lived head. As for taste ...think of any brown best bitter and you'll have it. |
| Oakleaf - Hole Hearted | 4.70 | Not Tried | |
| Nelson - Nelson's Blood | 6.00 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds) - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried | |

02 Feb 2006 (Andrew)
An early evening visit. Only a handful of people in so we sat upstairs. Very cosy pub.
| Cottage - Great Western | 4.80 | | Dark ruby brown beer. A slight caramel taste followed by mellow burnt sugar. Slight hop finish with an alcoholic glow on the tonge |
| Cottage - Goldrush | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Wells & Young's - Wells Bombadier | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
22 Dec 2005 (Andrew)
Last pub in my mini-ramsgate tour. Great split level pub with the upper level full of seating and the lower with bar stools. If I lived in Ramsgate this would be my local! I'm sure I saw Eddie Gadd walk in.
| Archers - Top Tipple | 5.00 | | Strong malt bitter taste followed by strong alcohol flavours |
| Burton Bridge - Burton Porter | 4.50 | | Black beer with a bit of damson and a bit of liquorish. |

| Nelson - Friggin in the Riggin | 4.70 | Not Tried | |
08 Sep 2005 (Aliaster)
Marvellous pub with an on-going beerfest. Five Proper Beers ( One regular & four guests ) well cared for by the curmudgeonly landlord and his good lady wife. Door-stop sandwiches are heartily recommended. This most august establishment is home to the "Tuesday Hat Club" - an informal gathering that takes place weekly between opening time & 15.00 - the only stipulation being that some sort of headgear ( the more outlandish, the better! ) is mandatory and worn between said hours, where both jovial banter and fine ale is partaken of in equal measure by a veritable cornucopia of raconteurs, wits, bon-viveurs and all-round good coves. The landlord apparently belongs to a clandestine organisation that goes by the title "Archbishops-r-us".
"An oasis in the midst of a desert of mediocrity" - Oliver Pynt, food and drink critic, The Cleckheaton Thunderer.
| Cottage - Goldrush | 5.00 | | |
25 Mar 2005 (Ian)
Corner pub with one bar, but several drinking levels. Impressive stained glass windows. Good range of ever changing beers. Hats, dressing up and militaria decorate the pub. Cribbage played, feels like a good local
